Cycles are normal phenomena in the creative world. After an industrial accident, all leading companies take a step back and concentrate their efforts on important projects and ‘safe bets’. In the video game world, when Nintendo experienced an economic downturn, a number of independent studios were left in the lurch. The French publisher Focus Home Interactive tried to solve their problems and give them everything which video game companies need in order to succeed such as financing, communication, distribution and expertise to help growth. If French video game companies still exist in this sector, it is largely due to Focus and its model whose originality was how the company worked and shared added value with the studios. The model was also ‘human’, characterised by enthusiasm and flexibility. It is a model which, in a context where 400 new video games are published every week and where success is very uncertain, can well boast an incredible success rate.
