In the 20th century, Bell Labs was a benchmark for excellence in scientific research and in terms of very important discoveries such as the transistor radio, information theory, the Big Bang, the ‘C’ programming language and the UNIX computer operating system, optical transmission and light sensitive sensors. In 2007, after Bell merged with Alcatel and Lucent, Bell Labs continued its research but turned its focus on Alcatel-Lucent’s international activities (since the company is present in eight countries) and those oriented towards ‘open innovation’. As a result, Bell Labs France’s site (which is Bell Labs second largest site) which registers more than one hundred and forty patents every year in ICTs and has created numerous research partnerships, has become a leading company in French and global innovation.
