Is the new Chinese economy which was a result of post-Mao reforms really capitalist? It has been called Confucian (one hundred years after Max Weber asked why capitalism did not develop in China), and it is now said to be state socialism. Far from undermining the influence of the State on the economy, globalisation reinforces it. A sociological and historical analysis attempts to interpret these paradoxes without taking into account the identity stereotypes and pre-conceived categories.
