The hospital is not a business : it is a public service. Its charges are fixed and it is hard to evaluate its production. Nevertheless, it has problems similar to those facing companies, such as competition, budget controls and the difficulties associated with becoming more open. It is not surprising that those involved in the health sector are fascinated by methods and management tools used in business. Can business management tools and methods be transferred to the hospital scene ?
