The 'Printemps de Bourges' festival features four thousand artists. Its identity remains unchanged in a climate of great change. It is an area where new talents and new trends can be found, and its patrons come again and again. It was founded thirty years ago because there were no specific venues for many artists who were denied access to perform on television or public service radio. The festival, which brings together songs, especially popular songs, as well as rock and modern music, is successful for many reasons. Its main success is its longevity and the fact that it has lasted so long without being institutionalised or spoiled. It has remained fresh while its original audience has aged, and it has not become a bottomless pit for subsidies. The 'Printemps de Bourges' is a private company and functions as a business venture, but inevitably needs public funding in order to provide for young talent and emerging trends. The festival straddles both the private and public sector, and is a winning formula for the French music scene.
