Vatry International Airport has been in operation for less than five years and should have the capacity to handle almost twenty thousand tonnes of freight by 2004. It is therefore the fourth largest regional airport in France. It has the advanatge of an exceptional geographical location, directly linked with the North-East European motorway network. It is the first Category A (a category respresenting the longest and widest runway available for the largest aeroplanes) site which has opened in France since 1975, and it can accomodate the largest freight and passenger carriers regardless of weight transported. The success of the project is undoubtedly due to the unfailing support of all the inhabitants of the Marne département. The elected representatives of the Marne saw a unique opportunity to stimulate the economic development of their département. The population was reassured by the efforts made by the airport to respect the environment and they subscribed in a very short time to the compulsory loan which they has been offered. To play in the major league, all that it remains for Vatry to do, is to win over a key player, in this case, an important pick-up and delivery service like DHL…
