Biomethane is a fast-growing industrial sector that is making a real contribution to decarbonising the economy. While production was virtually nil in 2013, it reached 12 TWh in 2023, representing the equivalent of two nuclear units. It should reach 44 TWh by 2030. This is the success of an entire industry, but also that of a key player. How has GRDF, a French fossil fuel distributor with a condemned historical business, been able to reinvent itself in just over a decade? Are urgency and long-term vision as antagonistic as they are made out to be, or are they, on the contrary, a powerful lever for achieving general mobilisation? Are regional approaches too local, and therefore doomed to never be scaled up, or on the contrary, are they the basis for virtuous economic development, on which dynamic and resilient ecosystems are built? A lesson in strategic management that appeals to young people in search of meaning.
