Thanks to an initiative launched by Carmen Colle, the daughter of Italian immigrants who became a metal worker at the age of fourteen, an original programme of social reintegration emerged in 1990 in an area of France which was badly hit by the decline of the textile industry. Women from all backgrounds, without professional qualifications but with a fierce determination to do something about their situation, gradually discovered – thanks to former workers who taught them the secrets of the trade – an unusual profession, high fashion knitting, which they mastered to the highest level of excellence. Their company, World Tricot, was liquidated because of a legal dispute but it rose momentarily from the ashes months later, thanks to the sale of one of its creations, a sumptuous red dress, the symbol of an unwavering solidarity and the irresistible determination of Carmen and the women of Lure.
